An Orphan Smiles is pleased to provide an avenue of hope and relief for older orphaned children who are soon to “age-out” of the orphanage system or who already have aged out and are enrolled in an educational or vocational program.

Tsurupinsk is located in southern Ukraine in the Kherson region approximately 350 miles south of Kiev.  Tsurupinsk Orphanage was opened in 1968 for children with polio and cerebral palsy. It has become the only orphanage in Ukraine where children with complex disabilities and significant cognitive disabilities can live, study and be treated. Currently, the orphanage houses 141 children aged 4 to 18 years with varying degrees and combinations of cognitive and physical disabilities.  Sadly, a percentage of the children at this orphanage are bedridden.

Click HERE to meet the Tsurupinsk Graduates who are currently enrolled in an educational or vocational program and have been selected to participate in the AOS Graduate Assistance Program.   If you would like to sponsor one of these hardworking students from Tsurupinsk Children's Home,  please contact Leslie for program details and more information.

Program Description and Objectives for Tsurupinsk Children’s Home

  • Find a sponsor for each nominated child who is accepted or enrolled in a vocational or university program.
  • Maintain sponsorship for grads for the duration of their studies. Government operated vocational programs usually run two years. Other programs may be longer.
  • Provide an allowance of $50 a month for living expenses, supplies or emergency needs.
  • Continue support for the grads that attend classes and maintain good study habits.
  • Provide the feeling that someone cares about them and their future.

Program Details:

The Gap Sponsorship Program for the graduates of Tsurupinsk is under the overall direction of Bogdan Bashtovy who also runs the Graduate Support Center in Kyiv. Vadym Reutskyi, who is more local to Tsurupinsk, coordinates directly with our GAP students who attend vocational schools in multiple regions.  Monthly stipends are direct deposited into their individual accounts and An Orphan Smiles receives and keeps record of all deposit receipts. The students are expected to meet their obligations for the GAP program which include school attendance, passing grades, and acceptable behavior.  If the student fulfills the program requirements, he or she is eligible to continue in the GAP program for the following year of study.

Sponsorship consists of $50.00 per month for the duration of their studies.

Letter writing is such an integral part of this program. The students yearn for this type of interaction with their sponsors who provide them with a tremendous amount of needed encouragement and friendship. We encourage our sponsors to write as often as they wish. An Orphan Smiles has a Translation Team who will translate sponsor’s letters. If students write to sponsors, we will gladly translate their letters which will be emailed directly to the sponsor after translation.

Click here to view helpful guidelines about writing letters for translation to your sponsored child.

Sponsors can send translation request directly to our Translation Request Center at:

On average, each translation request will take seven days for completion, and will be emailed back to the sponsor.

Care Packages:

Sending parcels are not a requirement of the Graduate Assistance Program. However, if sponsors would like to send their student a care package, please refer to the printable Tsurupinsk GAP Programl Summary.

Additional Monetary Donations:

An Orphan Smiles does not encourage sponsors to regularly send additional funding beyond the $50 monthly assistance. Part of the intent of the program is for the students to learn to budget their money. However, small monetary gifts for special occasions like Birthdays, Christmas, Graduation, or possibly a pair of shoes or school supplies are reasonable and are acceptable for sponsors to consider. A general donation to the Graduate Support Center is also another way to help these students.

For more information on this program and the students that are available for sponsorship please contact Leslie at LeslieR@AnOrphanSmiles.org.
